WISCONSIN-LA CROSSE ENDS LOSING STREAK TO WHITEWATER
October 9, 2023
A game-winning field goal as time expired propelled Wisconsin-La Crosse to a 37-34 upset victory over then-No. 3 Wisconsin-Whitewater, vaulting the Eagles to No. 9 in this week’s AFCA Division III Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The win snapped a 19-game losing streak to Whitewater which dated back to 2004 and dropped the Warhawks to No. 11. The game was played in front of 20,113 fans, the largest crowd to ever see an NCAA Division III football game on campus.
Only one other ranked team fell this week as the No. 19 Cortland (N.Y.) Red Dragons used 552 yards of total offense to take down then-No. 22 Utica, 56-3, dropping the Pioneers from the Top 25.
The Red Dragons were not the only team to post impressive offensive numbers this week, as nine Top 25 teams scored 50 points or more. This group was headlined by No. 12 Aurora (Ill.), who set the school’s single-game scoring record with a 91-0 domination of Concordia (Ill.). After they turned the ball over on downs on their first possession, the Spartans scored on 10 straight drives, which included two punt returns for touchdowns.
