Wartburg Rolling Through the American Rivers Conference
October 23, 2023
Wartburg (Iowa) continued their dominant season Saturday afternoon as the took down Loras (Iowa), 62-7. The Knights racked up nearly 500 yards of offense on their way to scoring 60 or more points for the third time this season. Wartburg quarterback Nile McLaughlin tied a single-game school record with five touchdown passes, all in the first half of the contest. The win moves the Knights to 8-0 on the season, keeping them locked into the No. 3 spot in this week’s AFCA Division III Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.
Only one Top 25 team fell this week as then-No. 9 St. John’s (Minn.) lost to conference foe, Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.), 38-35. The loss dropped the Johnnies 11 spots to No. 20. Wisconsin-River Falls rebounded from their loss a week ago and jumped back into the Top 10 with a dominant, 75-14, win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point. DePauw (Ind.) had to overcome a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to squeak past Wittenberg (Ohio), 41-35, in overtime. The Tigers remain in the 23rd spot and are undefeated with an 8-0 mark.
One of two undefeated teams will fall this coming weekend as No. 7 Johns Hopkins (Md.) travels to No. 16 Muhlenberg (Pa.) in a battle for the top spot in the Centennial Conference. The only other Top 25 matchup coming during the final Saturday in October has No. 25 Mary Hardin-Baylor (Tex.), who looks to continue their four-game win streak, traveling to No. 22 Hardin-Simmons (Tex.) for the top spot in the American Southwest Conference.
