St. John’s Registers Big Win Over Wartburg
September 16, 2024
Wartburg (Iowa) took the opening drive in their game against St. John’s (Minn.) 71 yards for a touchdown, but that was the only score they would get until later in the fourth quarter. The Johnnie defense clamped down, recording 10 sacks and allowing only nine rushing yards in a 35-13 victory. The win moved St. John’s up to No. 7 in this week’s AFCA Division III Coaches Poll, presented by Hudl, while Wartburg dropped nine spots to No. 15.
North Central (Ill.) took more control over the No. 1 spot after their dominating win over then-No. 13 Aurora (Ill.), 48-21. The Cardinals received 33 first place votes, compared to No. 2 Cortland’s (N.Y.) 16. The Red Dragons might get to earn some of those first-place votes back this coming week, depending on how they do against No. 11 Susquehanna (Pa.) on Saturday. That is one of two top 25 matchups in the third week of action. The other has No. 6 Johns Hopkins (Md.) playing host to newly ranked and No. 25 Salisbury (Md.). Both teams are 2-0 heading into the early season clash.
