Skills & Drills – Tony Savino, OL – Centenary College
April 12, 2023
This drill can be completed in a simple 1-on-1 setting or for your individual drills. Utilizing a board and a hand shield, Coach Savino illustrates the progression of blocking he consistently reps with his group.
Coach Savino stresses the importance of loading their hips and coiling like a spring. Coach Savino likes to incorporate physics into his teaching points to provide knowledge of the WHY of the movements that he teaches.
Coach echoes the importance of using a three-step progression with their feet on the snap of the ball.
He allows them to be in whatever stance they prefer, performing each step one at a time before they put all steps of the progression together. On the first step, they are pulling their hands back and taking their first step. Once that has been repped, they begin the second part of the progression which involves throwing their hands at the bag after coiling up. Along with the hands being thrown, they take a second step pushing down the board. On the last step, all pieces come together as the athlete explodes through the bag as he brings his third step along with his hands.
