Skills & Drills | Brock Hays, Tulane | Running Back Blocking Drills
March 18, 2024
Brock Hays is currently the running backs coach at Tulane University. He demonstrated his running back blocking drills at the 2023 AFCA Convention.
Feet & Hand Placement
This drill focuses on putting the back in a proper staggered stance and alignment with the defender. The running back should take the inside half of the defender and strike the breastplate with thumbs up and hands inside.
Cat & Mouse
In this progression, the back puts himself in the proper stance while the defender shuffles laterally back and forth. The back needs to maintain the proper stance and inside leverage alignment while mirroring the defender.
Pound the Ground
In this progression, the back focuses on a strong base with an emphasis on his post foot. The back “pounds the ground” laterally and strikes in reaction to the coach’s hands or tennis ball.
Set, Strike, & Sink
The last progression brings all of the drills together, but the focus is more on a head-up block.
