Pittsburg State Wins Top 10 Battle
October 10, 2022
The top spot in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association was on the line when No. 9 Northwest Missouri State visited No. 7 Pittsburg State (Kan.). The Gorillas built a 21-3 lead by halftime, then held on for the victory thanks to a missed two-point conversion attempt by the Bearcats with 12 seconds to go in the game. Pittsburg State won 24-22, solidifying first place in the MIAA and keeping their No. 7 spot in the AFCA Division II Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The loss dropped Northwest Missouri State to No. 16.
The top eight teams remained the same this week with Ferris State (Mich.) holding their top spot after a 33-28 win over then-No. 25 Saginaw Valley State (Mich.). Grand Valley State (Mich.) remained unbeaten and at No. 2 after its 45-3 victory over American International (Mass.), setting the stage for the biggest game of the season in Division II as the Lakers travel to Ferris State for a battle of 1 versus 2. The Bulldogs have won eight of the last nine meetings, including last year’s playoff game, 54-20.
There is only one other Top 25 matchup, and it includes a team that is ranked in the AFCA Top 25 for the first time ever. Benedict (S.C.) enters the poll for the first time at No. 23. The Tigers will travel to conference rival and No. 21 Albany State (Ga.) on Saturday.
