Each year the AFCA strives to provide its membership with educational opportunities provided by some of the best coaches in the game and special interest topics provided by some of the top in their fields. The General Sessions held Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning at the 2018 AFCA Convention in Charlotte will be no exception!
In addition to many wonderful speakers, the General Sessions this year will be in a new fast paced format with recaps and commentary from Bobby Rosinski of Charlotte’s ESPN 730AM. We’re excited about the new format and are sure it’ll be a refreshing change.

Some of the speakers included in this General Session are Todd Berry, Bronco Mendenhall, Jen Welter, Allan Trimble and Mike Norvell. Also during this General Session, the AFCA and TeamSnap will present the 2017 AFCA Power of Influence Award to Allan Trimble.
Todd Berry - Pulse of the Profession: The AFCA Executive Director will kick off the General sessions. Here you’ll hear the latest goings on in the Association, as well as news from around the different divisions. You won’t want to miss hearing Coach Berry discuss the great things he has planned for YOUR Association.
Bronco Mendenhall - The University of Virginia Head Coach recently completed his second season leading the program This past season he led the Cavaliers to their first bowl game berth in six years. Prior to taking over at Virginia, he spent 11 seasons as the head coach at Brigham Young University where he compiled a 99-43 record to rank 12th in total wins among all FBS teams during that time.
Jen Welter - The NFL’s first female coach, will discuss her experiences and love of the game. She recently released her memoir, Play Big: Lessons in Being Limitless from the First Woman to Coach in the NFL. Welter acts as an ambassador of the game through the numerous football camps she runs. Check out her interview on the AFCA’s Inside the Headset podcast (Jen Welter Podcast), you’ll definitely be ready to hear more.
Allan Trimble - The Jenks (Okla.) High School head coach has created a lasting legacy. At Jenks for over 20 years, he is one of the most distinguished coaches in high school football, amassing 15 district championships, 13 state titles, and over 200 career wins. Trimble, whose past few seasons were coached in the shadow of his ever-worsening ALS, is the 2017 AFCA Power of Influence Award recipient. Don’t miss this sure-to-be-inspirational segment.
Mike Norvell - The University of Memphis head coach had a banner year in only his second season with the Tigers, ending the regular season at 10-2, clinching the AAC West and earning a spot in the Liberty Bowl. Norvell began his career in 2006 as a GA at Central Arkansas. He worked his way up the ladder, coaching at Tulsa, Pittsburgh and Arizona State, and closed his first decade of coaching by accepting the top spot at Memphis. You’re sure to get some great advice from him during the closing portion of Monday’s General Session.

Tuesday will be another great day of speakers and topics at a NEW TIME. In addition to our slate of speakers, including Rachel Baribeau, Brian Kight, Jon Gordon, Jeff Monken, and Gus Malzahn, there will also be a special presentation to the new Club 35 Inductees. Every year, the AFCA honors the coaches who have been members of the Association for 35 years, this year we’re honored to share this presentation with you.
Rachel Baribeau - The nationally recognized sports reporter has become known for her ability to deliver authentic stories. The Auburn alumna is a host on SiriusXM College Sports Nation and a writer for gridironnow.com. Her program, “Changing the Narrative,” focuses on teaching football players “to be the men they were created to be.”
Brian Kight - Is a multi-industry leader on the topics of leadership, culture, and behavior. As the CEO of Focus 3, he provides clients with simple systems that produce exceptional results for organizations. Be sure to attend this session to gather tools to enhance your leadership playbook and strengthen your team culture. Jon Gordon - The renowned author's work centers around leadership, culture and teamwork. A speaker and author, Gordon bibliography includes 15 books; of those, five were best-sellers. His principles have been put to the test by numerous Fortune 500 companies, professional and college sports teams, school districts, hospitals, and non-profits. He and his training/consulting company are passionate about developing positive leaders, organizations and teams. Join Jon to learn how to be a positive inspiration and make a greater impact in your life.
Jeff Monken - The Army Head Coach is entering his fifth season leading one of the nations service academy’s. Since taking over the program he has led the Black Knights to two consecutive winning seasons and two bowl game berths. Prior to Army, Monken served as the head coach at Georgia Southern where he led the Eagles to three FCS Playoffs Semifinal appearances and two conference titles.
Gus Malzahn - The Auburn University head coach began his career at the high school level, but jumped to the college ranks in 2006 as the offensive coordinator on Houston Nutt’s staff at Arkansas. After a brief stop as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at Tulsa, Malzahn landed his first stint at Auburn. In 2010, he helped lead the Tigers and Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Cam Newton to an undefeated 14-0 record that included an SEC Championship and a National Championship. Malzahn spent a year at Arkansas State before returning to Auburn in 2013. The 2017 season saw Malzahn and the Tigers end the regular season 10-2 with wins over then-No. 2 Georgia and then-No. 1 Alabama, tied for the SEC West and a berth in the Peach Bowl.
