Key Offensive Line Drills for Pass Protection
1. Long Mirror Drill
Purpose: Develop footwork and body control while mirroring defenders.
Execution:
-
Start in a three-point stance, simulating a live rep.
-
On command, rise from the stance with hands up, protecting the chest.
-
Keep hands straight out, forming a “W” with thumbs pointing upward.
-
Mirror the defender’s movements, staying within your body frame without reaching.
Defender’s Role:
-
Move side-to-side, changing direction at will.
Key Coaching Points:
-
Keep weight on the insteps of your feet.
-
Move at a controlled pace, avoiding rushed movements.
-
Maintain proper posture and take extra steps when needed.
2. Mirror Score Drill
Purpose: Combine footwork with explosive strikes.
Execution:
-
Incorporate all elements of the Long Mirror Drill in a shorter space.
-
Strike the defender when they come within one yard.
-
Repeat 4-5 times per rep, focusing on a tricep punch and weight distribution.
Key Coaching Points:
-
Engage the chest and triceps for a powerful, violent punch.
-
Keep your hands up after each strike; avoid dropping them.
-
Maintain balance on the insteps of your feet.
3. Three-Punch Drill
Purpose: Strengthen hand placement and anchor against bull rushes.
Execution:
-
Begin in a three-point stance.
-
Strike the defender three times, resetting your feet after each punch.
-
On the third strike, anchor your feet to counter a bull rush, locking out your hands to create space.
Defender’s Role:
-
Step toward the offensive lineman on the first two strikes.
-
Simulate a bull rush on the third strike.
Key Coaching Points:
-
Keep hands up and extended throughout the drill.
-
Maintain balance and posture while anchoring.
