Wingate Enters Top 25 With Upset Of Delta State

Wingate (N.C.) used a stingy defense to beat then-No. 17 Delta State (Miss.), 21-7, vaulting the Bulldogs into the AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, presented by Hudl. Both teams are tied at No. 24. The Wingate defense racked up five sacks and 13 tackles for loss and held the Delta State passing attack to more than 200 yards below their average in the victory.
Central Missouri and Pittsburg State (Kan.) both lost, causing a big shakeup in the top 25. Harding (Ark.) is still No. 1, but they are followed by No. 2 Grand Valley State (Mich.), who beat No. 22 Colorado State-Pueblo, 24-21. Valdosta State (Ga.) moves up three spots to No. 3 after blanking Fayetteville State (N.C.), 34-0. Colorado School of Mines is the new No. 4 team, followed by Ferris State (Mich.) at No. 5.
Pittsburg State lost to Emporia State (Kan.), 24-21, dropping the Gorillas to No. 10 while the Hornets jump up eight spots to No. 13. Central Missouri fell nine places to No. 11 after its 57-40 loss to Central Oklahoma. No. 12 West Florida has the only top 25 matchup this coming week as they play host to newly ranked and No. 23 West Alabama in a key early season Gulf South Conference battle.
