1988 AFCA President Roy Kidd Passes Away

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) is saddened to hear about the passing of 1998 AFCA President and former Eastern Kentucky head coach, Roy Kidd.
Kidd was a dedicated AFCA member, serving on the AFCA Board of Trustees from 1991-98 and serving as president during his final year. He would earn six AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honors in his 39 seasons as head coach at Eastern Kentucky. During the 2023 AFCA Convention in Charlotte, Kidd was named recipient of the AFCA Amos Alonzo Stagg Award for lifetime contributions to the game of football.
A standout quarterback and centerfielder on Eastern Kentucky teams, Kidd began his coaching career in 1955 as an assistant basketball and head baseball coach at Madison Central High School in Richmond. He moved to Madison-Model High School after one season to be the head football coach, leading the squad to an overall record of 54-11-1 from 1956-61. Kidd then spent one season as an assistant football coach at Morehead State before returning to his alma mater in 1963 as an assistant coach.
Kidd became head coach in 1964 and stayed on the sidelines at EKU until 2002. He guided the Colonels to an overall record of 314-124-8 with two NCAA I-AA national titles (1979 and 1982), 25 consecutive winning seasons, 17 NCAA I-AA playoff appearances and 16 Ohio Valley Conference titles. He coached 55 All-Americans and 41 of his former players went on to sign NFL contracts.
Kidd was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003 and is also a member of the EKU Hall of Distinguished Alumni, the EKU Athletics Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, the OVC Hall of Fame and the Madison County Sports Hall of Fame. The EKU football stadium is named Roy Kidd Stadium in his honor.
Kidd was born on December 4, 1931, in Corbin, Kentucky, and passed away in Richmond, Kentucky, on September 12, 2023. He was 91 years old.
