1985 AFCA President Vince Dooley Passes Away

The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) is saddened to hear about the passing of 1985 AFCA President and former Georgia head coach, Vince Dooley.
Dooley was a dedicated AFCA member, serving on the AFCA Board of Trustees from 1976-85 and serving as president during his final year. Dooley earned AFCA National and Regional Coach of the Year honors in 1980 after leading Georgia to a 12-0 record and the national championship that season. He would earn six AFCA Regional honors in his 25 seasons as head coach. In 2001, Dooley was named the recipient of the AFCA Amos Alonzo Stagg Award for lifetime contributions to the game of football.
After his playing days were over at Auburn, Dooley served in the Marines and then began his coaching career as an assistant coach for his alma mater in 1956. After eight years at Auburn, Dooley took the head job at Georgia and stayed there for the rest of his career. He earned an overall record of 201-77-10 with six Southeastern Conference titles. In 1979, Dooley earned a second title as athletic director, serving in both capacities until his retirement from coaching in 1988. He would continue to serve as athletic director until 2004, with the Bulldogs winning 23 national titles and 78 SEC championships under his leadership.
Dooley was recognized with many honors during his illustrious career. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. Georgia put Dooley in their Circle of Honor in 2004.
Dooley coached six College Football Hall of Fame inductees, a Heisman Trophy winner, a Maxwell Award winner, an Outland Trophy Award winner and 40 First-Team All-Americans.
Dooley was born on September 4, 1932, in Mobile, Alabama, and passed away in Athens, Georgia, on October 28, 2022.
